Darksaber vs. Lightsaber: What Is the Difference?

Did you know that, canonically, Younglings start their lightsaber training when they’re still toddlers? These powerful weapons start off in the hands of children!

All-Star Wars fans know all about lightsabers, but how much do you know about the Darksaber? This unique weapon has a few extra quirks and features.

We’re here to talk about the difference between Darksaber vs. Lightsaber. Read on to learn more.

Who’s Using These Different Star Wars Weapons?

It’s a common misconception that only Jedi can wield the various types of lightsabers. While we see Jedi with lightsabers most often (and all Jedi are supposed to wield lightsabers), anyone can wield one.

Force users seem to be the most effective lightsaber wielders, but even in the original trilogy, Han Solo was able to wield a lightsaber to slice the belly of a tauntaun.

Sith can also use lightsabers (though these are often referred to as Sith sabers. The most iconic Sith saber, in our opinion, is the double-bladed one wielded by Darth Maul. Who can forget the moment that they first saw this unique new weapon?

So what about the Darksaber?

Many people don’t know about this weapon because it isn’t in the mainline movies. It’s featured in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and several other offshoots of the Star Wars series.

It was crafted by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian to join the Jedi order.

Someone can only legitimately claim the Darksaber if they defeat the previous owner of it. There are situations in which this isn’t the case, like when Bo-Katan was given the Darksaber by Sabine Wren.

We last see the Darksaber in the possession of Din Djarin.

Darksaber vs Lightsaber: Features and Design

So what makes the Darksaber different?

Lightsabers are long light blades that come in a variety of colors. The most common ones we see in the series are red (for the Sith), green, and blue, but they come in a wide variety of colors and it’s unclear if there are limitations.

The Darksaber is void black with a white glow. This is due to Tarre Vizsla’s unique relationship to The Force.

Lightsabers have a cylindrical shape from the hilt all the way through the blade. They don’t resemble true sabers at all as a result.

The Darksaber is sharper with a more angular hilt. It’s similar to a katana.

One unique feature of the Darksaber is that it feels heavier if the user is fearful, under extreme stress, or otherwise upset. It also crackles, unlike the lightsaber.

Darksaber vs. Lightsaber: Similar, But Different

Both of these Star Wars weapons are powerful in their own ways, but they’re not the same. The Darksaber is a unique weapon, and as far as we know, there’s only one of them.

When it comes to Darksaber vs. lightsaber, we don’t have much information about the former. Hopefully, we learn more as The Mandolorian continues.
